This competency helps ensure that social workers understand quantitative and qualitative research methods and their roles in advancing the science of social work and in evaluating their practice. By meeting this competency I demonstrate that I understand the processes for translating research findings into effective practice. As a social worker I vow to use and translate research evidence to inform and improve practice, policy, and service delivery.
Competency:
Engage in Practice-Informed Research and Research-Informed Practice
Practice Behaviors:
1. Use practice experience and theory to inform scientific inquiry and research.
2. Apply critical thinking to engage in analysis of quantitative and qualitative research methods and research findings.
3. Use and translate research evidence to inform and improve practice, policy, and service delivery.
Evidence Based Learning:
1. I demonstrated this competency in my practicum by researching interventions for a child who was working on communication skills. In the classroom I demonstrated this by participating in research day.

2. During my practicum I researched information on parenting tools and ways to connect with their children. I shared this information on Family Day. I also researched information on common issues faced by our Bethel’s client population, and I presented this information in one of our Independent Living Groups. In the classroom I demonstrated this by conducting research for research day, and presenting the information to a group of professors and students.
3. I demonstrated this throughout my practicum by administering Behavior Assessment System for Children (BASC) questionnaires. In the classroom I applied research done during projects, into ideas of how to better serve my potential clients.
