Competency 6 – Engagement

This competency helps ensure that social workers understand that engagement is an ongoing component of social work practice with, and on behalf of, diverse individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. By meeting this competency I demonstrate that I value the importance of human relationships. As a social worker I vow to value principles of relationship-building and inter-professional collaboration to facilitate engagement with clients, constituencies, and other professionals as appropriate.

Competency:

Engage with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities

Practice Behaviors:

1. Apply knowledge of human behavior and the social environment, person-in-environment, and other multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks to engage with clients and constituencies.

2. Use empathy, reflection, and interpersonal skills to effectively engage diverse clients and constituencies.

Evidence Based Learning:

1. I demonstrated this practice behavior in practicum by creating a worksheet of Erickson’s Developmental Stages and discussing this during an Independent Living Group. In the classroom I demonstrated this by conducting an interview and writing a bio-psycho-social paper. I applied my knowledge of Erickson’s and Piaget’s developmental stages to bio-psycho-social paper.

2. In order to fulfill the requirements for this practice behavior, I conducted an anonymous survey among my clients to ensure I am demonstrating these behaviors. In the classroom I demonstrated this by using empathy, and interpersonal skills to engage with pseudo clients, and while conducting the interview for my bio-psycho-social paper. I also demonstrated this while work facilitating a group at Standifer Gap SDA School. Here is the recording of my session.
