Competency 1 – Ethics & Professionalism

The NASW Code of Ethics is utilized as an ethical guideline for social workers to abide by. It is essential that social workers demonstrate professionalism and ethical behavior at all times. This competency helps ensure that social workers understand the values and ethics of the profession and uphold the profession’s standards. To meet this competency I used evaluation as the cognitive domain and characterization as the affective domain. The theories utilized are believe perseverance empathy-altruism hypothesis. By meeting this competency I demonstrate that I recognize the distinction between personal and professional values. I demonstrate that I have utilized the Code of Ethics in practice and I demonstrate that I have conducted myself as a professional when speaking, writing, and engaging with others. As a social worker I vow to be a life-long learner and I commit to continue improving my skills in order to ensure my effectiveness.

Competency:

Demonstrate Ethical and Professional Behavior

Practice Behaviors:

1.1 Develop a practice framework for analysis of complex environments, that is ethical, value-grounded, and evidenced-based

Evidence: I demonstrated this practice behavior by reviewing the Expulsion Policy and how it applies to fifteen years olds. I  identified an ethical dilemma within it and wrote a paper that discusses how school social workers can deal with this ethical dilemma.

1.2 Implement supervisory and self-care strategies that integrate professional strengths, limitations, and challenges

Evidence: I demonstrated this practice behavior by meeting with my supervisor on Wednesdays from 8 – 9 am. I expressed my comfort level when working with different situations and I only worked within my competence level. I created a Supervision Record Sheet to account for my supervision time, which my supervisor and I both signed. I also practiced at least an hour of self care each week.

1.3 Exhibit commitment to professional growth through continuing education, supervision, and ongoing consultation

Evidence: I demonstrated this practice behavior by attending three trainings during the school year for professional growth. I scanned the agenda for each training as well as journaled about them. The first training was a general training for counselors and social workers, the second training was a Regional Workforce Pipeline Summit, and the last training was a Women’s Leadership Training. Aside from these trainings, I also utilized my supervision time wisely by asking questions and discussing concerns with my supervisor.

1.4 Demonstrate professional oral and written communication skills

Evidence: I demonstrated this practice behavior by writing a Core Beliefs and Schemas Reflection Paper for my Advanced Clinical Practice course. Through this paper I reflected on my own core beliefs and the impact they have had on my life. This helped me understand more about how to implement this with clients.
