Competency 6 – Engagement

Engaging with people, organizations, and communities is one of the roles within social work. Social workers must be effective in engaging with these systems. This competency helps ensure that social workers understand that engagement is an ongoing component of social work practice with, and on behalf of, diverse individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. To meet this competency I used comprehension as the cognitive domain and receiving as the affective domain. The theories utilized are credibility and dilution effect. By meeting this competency I demonstrate that I value the importance of human relationships. As a social worker I vow to value principles of relationship-building and inter-professional collaboration to facilitate engagement with clients, constituencies, and other professionals as appropriate.

Competency:

Engage with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities

Practice Behaviors:

6.1 Examine evidence-based practices to prepare for professional engagement across systems

Field Evidence: I demonstrated this practice behavior by attending a training on Attachment-Based Family Therapy. After the training I engaged in conversation with my supervisor about the relevance of this therapy within the family and school system and how I could use this to prepare for my engagement with students and families.

Academic Evidence: I demonstrated this by transcribing one of my practices with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for my Advanced Clinical Practice course. I transcribed, analyzed, corrected, and reflected on my session in order to prepare for professional engagement across systems. Here is my Self-Evaluation Paper.

6.2 Engage with systems utilizing evidence-based practice strategies

Field Evidence: I demonstrated this practice behavior by utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) concepts with my caseload. Here is an example of a student’s situation and their response to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and the idea that our thoughts influence our feelings and our feelings influence our behaviors.

Academic Evidence: I demonstrated this practice behavior by learning about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in my Advanced Clinical Practice course and applying the concepts during my practice sessions. Here is a video of me during a practice session with a pseudo client.
