Competency 9 – Evaluation

Evaluation is a crucial aspect if social work practice. Evaluation allows for the social worker to gain a better understanding of the effectiveness of the intervention. Without such feedback the social worker cannot improve or change their practice strategies. This competency helps ensure that social workers understand that evaluation is an ongoing component of social work practice. To meet this competency I used comprehension as the cognitive domain and responding as the affective domain. The theories utilized are non-verbal behavior and symbolic interaction theory. By meeting this competency I demonstrate that I recognize the importance of evaluating processes and outcomes to advance practice, policy, and service delivery effectiveness. As a social worker I vow to select and use appropriate methods for evaluation of outcomes, apply my knowledge of human behavior and the social environment, person-in-environment, and other multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks in the evaluation of outcomes.

Competency:

Evaluate Practice with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities

Practice Behaviors:

9.1 Select evidence-based evaluation strategies according to their efficacy with specific client systems

Field Evidence: I demonstrated this practice behavior by creating a skills group and asking the students in the group for feedback during our sessions. My co-facilitator and I also created an evaluation form through which students can provide such feedback and other comments.

Academic Evidence: I demonstrated this practice behavior by writing a Disaster Assessment Research in which my peer and I evaluate the effectiveness of the interventions and steps taken during and after the Haiti earthquake in 2010.

9.2 Evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of practice outcomes across systems

Field Evidence: I demonstrated this practice behavior by obtaining data from the school in regard to changes in attendance and grades after working with the students on my caseload. Here is an example of the great progress shown by one of the students on my caseload.

Academic Evidence: I demonstrated this by transcribing one of my practices with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for my Advanced Clinical Practice course. I transcribed, analyzed, corrected, and reflected on my session in order to prepare for professional engagement across systems. Here is my Self-Evaluation Paper.
