Both quantitative and qualitative research are imperative research methods that enhance the advancement of social work practice. My goal is to continue educating myself on the principles of logic, scientific inquiry, and culturally informed and ethical approaches to build and enhance knowledge. My goal is to understand that evidence that informs practice derives from multi-disciplinary sources and multiple ways of knowing. I strive to adhere to the processes for translating research findings into practice. I will use practice experience and theory to inform scientific inquiry and research. I can apply critical thinking to analyze quantitative and qualitative research methods and research findings. I can use and translate any research evidence to inform and improve my practice, policies related to practice, and service delivery.
Evidence
4A – Engage in a review of contemporary best practices
Course Evidence: During the winter semester’s Mental Health Emphasis course, I wrote a literature review paper that discussed discrimination of the LGBT population’s ability to access substance abuse treatment. I was able to review several peer-reviewed articles to write this paper. Best practices emphasized in this paper included the importance of having culturally competent care when working with LGBT individuals and reviewing different approaches to training providers to provide culturally competent care. Please see my Literature Review.
Field Evidence: This student engaged in reviewing contemporary best practices in different ways within field practice. These incidences were discussed in journal entries over the course of the year related to practice with clients in therapy and concerning working remotely for the Restore Hope program. One specific incident was reviewing best practices when working with adult survivors of sexual abuse. Findings from the research review indicated that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) played a significant role in responses to triggers related to trauma displayed in therapy sessions. Another example of this occurred after this student attended the Region 3 meeting for the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (TDMHSAS). This student reviewed with her field supervisor how Erlanger’s task forces would not necessarily benefit the community due to lack of awareness and recruitment. Findings show that Erlanger creates task forces but does not have any implementation or follow-through on people’s recruitment to help in relief.
4B – Conduct research that responds to social work practice needs
Course Evidence: In Advanced Practice 1, I was part of a group that participated in researching interventions for parents who have children with mental illness. I conducted a parent intervention literature review as part of a proposal. In conducting research, a need for a parent education program was identified in Hamilton County because there are currently no parental education groups being offered in that area.
