Competency #6: Engage with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities

Community-Centered Philanthropy - The Aspen Institute Forum for Community Solutions

PRACTICE BEHAVIORS:

*6A: Examine evidence-based practices to prepare for professional engagement across systems: Course Evidence –  During my academic year, I was able to utilize the theories of memory and attention to understand Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. One class required multiple videos to be recorded to show our ability to utilize the CBT modality in a therapeutic setting with a pseudo client.

Field Evidence: Competency six has been a great way for me to understand evidence-based practices and recommending resources based on their needs and diagnosis. I have obtained beneficial information on how to determine what a client needs based on their answers in an assessment. Resources has been a huge barrier for me and as a social worker, which is one of the main roles social workers are known for. I feel I have learned a lot not only about clients but also about my community.

*6B: Engage with systems utilizing evidence-based practice strategies: Course Evidence – During the program, classes were provided showing different assessment tools and how to access online. A DSM 5 class was also provided to engage and understand the manual and how to properly diagnose according to symptomatology.

Field Evidence: During my practicum, I was able to assess clients utilizing a Case Management Assessment tool. The questionnaire inquired about not only mental health symptoms but medical, school history, and family history. Throughout the assessments, only one individual reported symptoms that he had not reported in the past three years with the company. With diligence and notifying a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, his diagnosis was rereviewed to discuss if it needed to be changed. I was able to utilize the theory of trust and obtain additional information that other assessors were not able to obtain previously.
