Competency 8

Competency #8: Intervene with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities

PRACTICE BEHAVIORS:

*8A: Implement clinical evidence-based interventions with individuals, families, and/or groups:

-Academic Evidence: During my academic coursework, I was able to take part in the training for DBT therapy utilizing the cold water technique. We engaged in the Ursula Whiteside therapy video and encouraged utilizing the therapeutic techniques of submerging the face in cold water to “cool down heated emotions”.  Can be accessed at https://www.ursulawhiteside.org/.

-Field Evidence:  Competency eight has provided me to be more aware of the family dynamic of the individual. I have learned through the program and through work how family dynamics can hurt or benefit the clients. It has also been rewarding to assist not only client after their assessment but also provide information that can benefit their family. Unfortunately, there has been time where family members were also the only ones that could be contacted or present during the assessment to help the client with being compliant.

*8B: Integrate macro level evidence-based strategies with organizations and/or communities:

Academic Evidence:  During my academic class, Advanced Social Policy, I was placed in a group. During the group, the HB16 policy in the state of Georgia was developed to assist homeless youth with secondary education. During the class a policy brief was developed and advertisement to advocate with local stakeholders of Georgia.

Field Evidence: During my internship the development of macro level based strategies were addressed during supervision. I was able to understand the importance of evidence based strategies such as therapeutic interventions utilized within the organization Highlands Community Services. One intervention I was able to advocate for was the utilization of Acudetox.
