As a social worker, we understand that working with diverse clients is essential; we know that the people we come into contact with are from different backgrounds, this can include, political ideology, race, religion/spirituality, sex, sexual orientation. As a social worker, we also understand that personal life experience may consist of oppression, poverty and privilege, power. There are so many different things that make a person who they are. Because social workers know that and have an understanding, we can talk about peoples strengths.
2.1: For my course work our group advocated for Telehealth services to be extended past the April 2022 deadline. The affective process used was valuing individuals that could now be reached and have access to healthcare services through Telehealth and that these services did not just benefit during COVID-19. The cognitive aspect is demonstrated when we share relevant knowledge with stakeholders and other individuals that there is a need for change to be made. Theoretically, the social cognitive theory construct of reciprocal determinism is identified and used here. It means that a person can be both an agent for change and a responder to change. The affective process shown here was those individuals that would benefit from the Telehealth services to being extended past the date.
2.2: During my field placement I was able to participate in a self awareness exercise that my task supervisor at Hospice of Chattanooga provided with me. This helped me identify personal biases that I may have had with death and dying. It helped me gain knowledge in what it might feel like to be dying. It also helped me realize what kinds of things I may value in life the most and what I value the least. I was also able to describe an experience in my journal and the knowledge I had used in this competency was to withhold biases and not make any judgements based on my own understanding and experiences. I also used the value of dignity and worth of a person. During both of these experiences I was able to become more self-aware and gain understanding of my own beliefs and values and how these beliefs and values can affect others.
