Competency 6: Engage with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities

Social workers should understand that engagement is an ongoing component of social work practice with diverse individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. Social workers should value human relationships and understand strategies of engaging with diverse clients to have more advanced practice effectiveness. As a social worker, I will value principles of relationship-building and interprofessional collaboration to facilitate engagement with clients, constituencies, and other professionals as appropriate.

It is important that social worker engage with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. In this competency I use the knowledge of providing a structure and consistency of group sessions within the Parkridge Valley inpatient program. The current program did not have much organization and structure and I highlight the knowledge of importance of consistency and structure within a program and for individuals and use the theoretical foundation of systems theory.  It is important to practice this as social workers and helps us practice values of trustworthiness and dignity and worth of the person.

6.1: In my field practicum I had to do mandatory trainings on therapeutic communication, facilitating groups, patient rights, patient safety, communication, trauma-informed care and others.  These were quite important for my placement at Parkridge Valley. I was tested on the trainings after each one and I was able to use the knowledge from the trainings to affectively answer the questions. At my placement at Parkridge Valley I was also able to review each client intake before prior engaging with each individual client. Because I am not able to show patient information due to HIPPA, I documented about my experience in one of my journal entries showing how reviewing the client data helped me with the interaction. I was able to use the knowledge of the client intake to know what the situation for the specific client was. I was also able to use systems theory to understand the client’s environment and external factors that may have caused such situation.

In my coursework, my team and I were able to implement diverse education for the staff of Mind, Body, Soul Healing. This will help encourage  staff members to engage in professional engagement across systems.

The cognitive and affective processes used through this competency is remembering information from trainings to test well for the post test and be competent of all trainings.

6.2: In my field practicum I was able to attend and engage in process groups at Parkridge Valley. I was able to engage with systems by utilizing evidence-based practice strategies which included CBT and therapeutic milieu. This image
shows that I had successfully completed this practice behavior while engaging, leading, and attending process groups at Parkridge Valley. The theoretical foundation was based on person in environment and systems theory.

In my coursework, our team created a program that also includes collaborating with other evidence-based programs in the Chattanooga community that helps with aiding the end of homelessness in Hamilton County or decreasing the homeless population. This paper assesses the need for this organization and the functions of the local agencies that help with the homelessness community in the Chattanooga area.
