Competency 8: Intervene with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities

Another ongoing part of a Social Workers job is to know when give consent, intervene on behalf of clients we work with. We are to be knowledgeable about evidence-informed interventions in order to reach goals that have been set. Social Workers use collaboration to implement evidence informed interventions that they have come to know through their understanding of theories and environment.

8.1: In my field placement at Hospice of Chattanooga I made  bereavement calls to families at the 4 month, 10 month, and 12 month mark in the year. I am not able to disclose information due to HIPPA however I attached the sheet that I used to document all calls. I was able to tell individuals of services offered and see how each individual was doing.  I was able to use evidence-based interventions such as CBT which included the education of automatic thoughts and how we behave on how we feel and feel on certain automatic thoughts we may have.  I was also able to use basic interviewing skills such as open and close ended questions, summarizing, paraphrasing, and active listening. I was able to show the value of competence through this practice behavior by using the knowledge I learned from class and other sources to help in my professional communication and career. This was a good way to put these values and skills to the test.

In my coursework, I was able to complete a CBT 20 minute final video. This video emphasized showed my skills used in cognitive behavioral therapy. Some of the skills shown are: confidentiality, summarizing, open and close ended questions, review homework, automatic thoughts, mood check and other skills not mentioned.

8.2: In my field practicum, I was able to integrate macro level evidence by creating suggestions and limitation of current process groups at Parkridge Valley. I used this information to enhance the program there and made a booklet of groups which will be highlighted in my special project . I used this infographic to educate staff members that would lead the groups on the importance of emotional regulation and consistency within groups. One good resource was shown to me by my peer. It contained helpful information from Dr. Brackett.  I interviewed quite a few people on group therapy and the effectiveness of consistency in conducting groups. I got a lot of feedback on what kinds of groups were most important and they all related to emotional regulation strategies.

In my coursework, our team was able to integrate macro level evidence based strategies in the development of Mind, Body, Soul Healing. There are a variety of services offered like training, housing, group therapy, case management and spiritual services available. During this process we were able to research, reach out, and reference theHEARTH Act. We talked about how this policy has helped our program and has the same mission as Mind, Body, Soul Healing in regards to eradicating homelessness.
