Competency 2: Engage Diversity & Difference in Practice

Description:

As social workers it is important that we present ourselves as learners and understand the importance of diversity. We must be aware of our personal biases and values in order to work with clients who do not share the same background as us. To understand our clients, we have to be willing to tailor our approach to suit the needs of their current environment, level of understanding, and priorities. It is our goal to eradicate discrimination in any form.

Practice Behaviors:

  • Develop and implement strategies that strive to eradicate discrimination in any form
  • Apply self-awareness and self-regulation to manage the influence of personal biases and values in working with diverse clients and constituencies

2A Evidence: Develop and implement strategies that strive to eradicate discrimination in any form

Course: During my Administrative Practice course, I had to create an organization and address the Human Resource Plan. In that plan I had to develop and implement strategies that were based on addressing diversity issues and eliminating discrimination.

2B Evidence: Apply self-awareness and self-regulation to manage the influence of personal biases and values in working with diverse clients and constituencies

Course: During my Trauma and Emergency Management course, I was trained on how to work with diverse clients while making sure I am self-aware and continuing to self-regulate as well. This training was titled Cultural Competency Curriculum for Disaster Preparedness and Crisis Response.
