Competency 8: Intervene with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities

Description:

Social workers understand that intervention is a key component in the process of the interaction with diverse individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. Social workers are aware that to achieve the client’s goal, they have to be well-informed about the potential benefits, harms and costs of any intervention. With interventions, social workers tend to negotiate, mediate, and advocate with and on behalf of their clients.

Practice Behaviors:

  • Implement clinical evidence-based interventions with individuals, families, and/or groups
  • Integrate macro level evidence-based strategies with organizations and/or communities

8A Evidence: Implement clinical evidence-based interventions with individuals, families, and/or groups

Course: During my last semester at Southern, I attended a clinical course that trained me how to facilitate a group session. At the end of this course, I was able to conduct a group therapy session and demonstrate my facilitator skills through our Zoom Session.

Field: During my time at The Transition House, I met with each client twice a month. During one of my individual sessions, I was able to use Supportive Psychotherapy (SP). Using SP allowed me to help my client maintain, restore, and possibly improve their self-esteem, ego functions, and adaptive skills. I was able to elaborate more in my February Monthly Journal on Week 4.

8B Evidence: Integrate macro level evidence-based strategies with organizations and/or communities

Course: During my second semester, I was able to pair up with two other classmates and create a new organization. This organization’s purpose was focused on giving assistance to children of all ages who are dealing with grief and equip them with the necessary tools needed to deal with the loss of a parent, sibling, or significant person(s) in their lives. During this process my group and I was able to conduct a research paper that addressed the macro, micro, and mezzo interventions.

Field: Interning at The Transition House, I came to the realization that we do not accept certain insurance. However in order to benefit my clients we gave them a list of Insurances that Erlanger Hospital and CHI Memorial accepts and they could go there to receive assistance.
