It helps me know what I need to do to help. Without assessment, I cannot know what I can do to best serve a population. It also asks me to create and execute assessments for clients where a preexisting one may not work. It helps me “diagnose” a problem and figure out how I can help. This competency also asks me to see how effective I am as a professional. I have to assess what I am doing regularly so I can ensure I am doing the best possible work for my clients.

Evidence for Practice Behavior 1: For this practice behavior, I was able to complete a symptom and diagnosis write-up for my Diagnosis course based on a video that was presented in class. This write-up was completed with the DSM-5. The disorders were labeled as Conduct Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Disruptive Mood Disregulation Disorder. Please see that document here.

During my practicum with Centerstone, I worked with a client with OCD. Diagnosing her with this disorder required me to do research on how to accurately diagnose and work with her. I used the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Scale with her and asked her about her symptoms to assess her. Then I compared my results with the DSM 5 criteria for OCD. See one of my evaluations using the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating-Scale here.

For this Competency, I had to use my knowledge of interpersonal relationships and systems to find appropriate assessment tools and methods. This Competency required me to use the social work value of service. To help and assess the lives of my clients, I have to serve them. The skills I used to engage in this competency are active listening, summarizing, clarification, and empathy. For these evidences I distinguished, produced information and looked critically at the individual and their system involvement. For these tasks, I had to organize, listen and formulate assessment tools. Systems theory informed my practice with this Competency. It helped me to take a step back and look at my client not just as an individual, but also as a part of other systems.

Competency #7: Assess Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities Social workers understand that assessment is an ongoing component of the dynamic and interactive process of social work practice with, and on behalf of, diverse individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.
