Social workers understand theories of human behavior and the social environment, and critically evaluate and apply this knowledge to effectively intervene with clients and constituencies. Social workers understand methods of identifying, analyzing and implementing evidence-informed interventions to achieve client and constituency goals. We intervene with clients, systems, etc. based on the assessments that we do. This is how we help our clients and the systems they are involved in. It, like the others, calls for evidence-based practice so we can know how to best serve like those who came before us. It calls us to interact with clients in a way that honors their dignity and worth and emphasizes the utilization of their feelings in the creation of change.

Evidence for Practice Behavior 1: For this practice behavior, I created a Family Treatment Plan in my Mental Health I class. This plan is to address family conflict. This plan is an outline of a vignette and how I would go about treating this family with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in actuality.

In my time with Centerstone, I worked with many clients who I have had to create interventions with. My care plans for each of my clients describes their presenting problem of trauma and low self-esteem and how we can address them with CBT. To see one of my care-plans, please click here.

Evidence for Practice Behavior 2: For this practice behavior, I wrote a paper with 3 other MSW Candidates about the organization of our dreams. This organization was created to serve families in the greater Chattanooga area with therapy, safe child exchanges and parenting classes. Within this document you will find evidence-based strategy of pet therapy.

For this competency, I was able to create a program for evidence-based pet therapy program for Centerstone to treat anxiety with a group in one of my classes. Within the program assignment, there were evidence based strategies such as pet therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy.

This Competency allowed me to use my knowledge of family systems and individuals. It also allowed me to use my knowledge of how to conduct evidence-based research. I used the value of service for this competency. This allowed me to serve my clients through therapy. I used active listening, clarifying, paraphrasing, summarizing, communication (non-verbal and oral), and empathy. For these tasks, I had to distinguish, formulate responses, and think critically. For these tasks, I had to discern, listen, and organize. Social learning theory informed my practice of this competency. Through positive reinforcement, I was able to help my clients form better behaviors.

Competency #8: Intervene with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities Social workers understand that intervention is an ongoing component of the dynamic and interactive process of social work practice with, and on behalf of, diverse individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.
