Competency 4: Engage in Practice-Informed Research and Research-Informed Practice
“Social workers use ethical, culturally informed, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive approaches in conducting research and building knowledge. Social workers use research to inform their practice decision making and articulate how their practice experience informs research and evaluation decisions. Social workers critically evaluate and critique current, empirically sound research to inform decisions pertaining to practice, policy, and programs. Social workers understand the inherent bias in research and evaluate design, analysis, and interpretation using an anti-racist and anti-oppressive perspective. Social workers know how to access, critique, and synthesize the current literature to develop appropriate research questions and hypotheses. Social workers demonstrate knowledge and skills regarding qualitative and quantitative research methods and analysis, and they interpret data derived from these methods. Social workers demonstrate knowledge about methods to assess reliability and validity in social work research. Social workers can articulate and share research findings in ways that are usable to a variety of clients and constituencies. Social workers understand the value of evidence derived from interprofessional and diverse research methods, approaches, and sources.
Practice Behaviors:
- apply research findings to inform and improve practice, policy, and programs; and
- identify ethical, culturally informed, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive strategies that address inherent biases for use in quantitative and qualitative research methods to advance the purposes of social work (CSWE, 2022).”
This competency highlights the need to apply evidence-based knowledge to inform social work practice while also using practice experiences to contribute to research. For me, it means constantly seeking reliable data to inform decisions while staying open to learning from real-world experiences. This challenges me to think critically and ensure that my work reflects the best practices available. Research allows social workers to identify effective interventions and adapt them to meet the unique needs of individuals and communities. It also empowers me to remain flexible and innovative as I face continuous social issues. Staying committed to this competency means I will prioritize ongoing education, participate in relevant research opportunities, and continuously evaluate the effectiveness of my work. Through this, I aim to improve the systems I work within and ensure better outcomes for those I serve.
Evidences
School: Research Methods II SOCW 498- Quality of Life in College
For this assignment, I worked with a team to create a mixed-methods research proposal titled Quality of Life in College. The study aimed to explore how college experiences and work engagement influence the overall quality of life for college students. We conducted an extensive literature review, designed quantitative and qualitative data collection methods, and developed a detailed methodology and data analysis plan, ensuring ethical considerations and measures to protect human subjects.
This assignment helped me build research skills essential to social work practice, including literature review, survey design, qualitative interviewing, and data analysis planning. It strengthened my understanding of how to assess needs and develop evidence-based approaches to address them. I also deepened my appreciation for the ethical responsibility and values of protecting human subjects, using culturally sensitive recruitment methods, and ensuring confidentiality.
I chose this assignment because it represents my ability to engage in research-informed practice, which is central to Competency 4. It demonstrates how I can gather and apply evidence to address real-world challenges that impact college students’ well-being. The process of developing a mixed-methods proposal helped me master the ability to integrate empirical research with the practical application of social work values such as service, integrity, and competence.
Field: Research on Retention
This assignment required me to research student retention rates and communication barriers with student support services, focusing on private, faith-based universities similar to Southern Adventist University. I collected and analyzed both quantitative and qualitative data, applied theoretical models, and presented practical recommendations for improving student engagement and retention.
This assignment helped me strengthen my research skills and deepen my understanding of institutional barriers that affect students. I learned how to critically evaluate academic literature, synthesize findings, and apply theory to real-life settings. It also reinforced important social work values such as service, cultural competence, the importance of relationships, and advocacy for systemic change.
I chose this assignment as evidence for Competency 4 because it allowed me to translate research findings into practical interventions. It demonstrated my ability to bridge research and practice by using data and theoretical frameworks to propose solutions to retention and communication challenges. Completing this assignment helped me develop mastery in using research to inform decision-making and interventions, which will benefit me in both macro and micro levels of social work practice.
Other: CITI Certificate
The CITI Certificate is an online training course focused on research ethics, human subjects protection, and best practices in social research. This assignment required me to study various ethical guidelines, complete modules on topics like informed consent, data confidentiality, and Institutional Review Board (IRB) processes, and then pass assessments to earn my certification.
The training deepened my understanding of ethical principles and standards in research. It clarified the importance of safeguarding participants’ rights and the responsibilities involved in handling sensitive data. By completing this course, I honed my ability to critically evaluate research proposals and practice ethical decision-making. This includes applying what I learned about informed consent and confidentiality to real-world scenarios in social work. The assignment reinforced my commitment to ethical practices and social responsibility. It helped me internalize the values of integrity, accountability, and respect for individual rights—cornerstones for effective and compassionate social work practice.
I selected the CITI Certificate as evidence for Competency 4 because it demonstrates my understanding of ethical standards in research and practice. Through this training, I learned how to make informed and responsible decisions when working with others. This foundation was essential during my senior year when I conducted research on the quality of life in college students, using surveys and in-person interviews. The certificate reflects my commitment to conducting research with integrity and protecting the well-being of participants.
