Social workers understand frameworks of ethical decision making and apply principles of critical thinking to those frameworks in practice, research, and policy arenas. Social workers recognize and manage personal values and the distinction between personal and professional values. Social workers understand how their evolving worldview, personal experiences, and affective reactions influence their professional judgment and behavior. Social workers take measures to care for themselves professionally and personally, understanding that self-care is paramount for competent and ethical social work practice. Social workers use rights-based, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive lenses to understand and critique the profession\u2019s history, mission, roles, and responsibilities and recognize historical and current contexts of oppression in shaping institutions and social work. Social workers understand the role of other professionals when engaged in interprofessional practice. Social workers recognize the importance of lifelong learning and are committed to continually updating their skills to ensure relevant and effective practice. For me, this competency emphasizes acting with integrity, maintaining boundaries, and making decisions rooted in the NASW Code of Ethics. It challenges me to reflect on my actions, remain accountable, and approach ethical dilemmas with thoughtfulness and care. Practicing this competency reminds me of the importance of trust and mutual respect in building strong relationships with clients and colleagues. Each petal of the flower represented a different aspect of my professional identity, such as my strengths in planning, problem-solving, coordination, and persistence, as well as the type of work environment where I can thrive in. One that is supportive, organized, and communicative. I also explored the knowledge areas that interest me, including music, geography, foreign languages, technology, and art. I reflected on the conditions that are most important for my success, such as happiness, health, security, calmness, and good weather. Most importantly, this assignment helped me clarify my purpose which is to create a world filled with love, compassion, and kindness by ensuring that every person feels respected, safe, and valued.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;font-size: 12pt\">This assignment helped me develop a deeper understanding of myself and how my strengths, values, and preferences shape my ability to be ethical and professional in my future social work career. By identifying my Holland Code as ASC, I gained insight into how I naturally work best with structure, creativity, and social interactions. This self-awareness allows me to recognize how my problem-solving abilities, persistence, and ability to encourage others contribute to ethical decision-making in social work. Reflecting on my ideal work environment reinforced the importance of finding supportive and communicative spaces where I can be my best self. I also realized how essential my core values of kindness, respect, and compassion are in my professional practice. Social workers are expected to treat clients with dignity, maintain professional integrity, and create positive change. This assignment helped me see how my personal values align with these expectations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;font-size: 12pt\">I chose this assignment as evidence for Competency 1 because it helped me connect my personal values to professional social work ethics. Understanding my strengths and values allows me to make ethical decisions, communicate effectively, and build meaningful relationships with clients and colleagues. This assignment also reinforced the importance of self-reflection, which is a key part of professional growth and maintaining ethical integrity. By completing the Flower Petals assignment, I gained a better understanding of how I can demonstrate ethical and professional behavior in social work. It showed me the importance of aligning my values with my career, working in environments that support my growth, and continuously developing my skills to serve others in the best way possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Field<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/swpro.org\/dalexish\/files\/2025\/04\/adhd-testing.pdf\">ADHD Testing Resources Guide<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I reviewed and edited a resource guide that provided information on ADHD testing for students. My task was to ensure that the document was accurate, up-to-date, and clearly organized so that students could easily access the information they needed. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I reviewed and edited an ADHD testing resource guide for students. This required ensuring the guide was clear, accurate, and accessible. The process refined my professional writing, attention to detail, and ability to curate reliable information. I began by verifying each resource link, consulting current professional guidelines, and working collaboratively with staff to ensure inclusiveness and accessibility. I also evaluated the language for clarity and neutrality. This process demonstrated my commitment to ethical practice, as social workers must ensure clients have accurate resources for informed decision-making and transparency in professional communication. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Editing the ADHD resource guide demonstrates my ability to uphold ethical and professional standards by ensuring students have reliable information. It also helped me develop skills in documentation, a key aspect of social work practice.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;font-size: 12pt\"><strong>Other<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/swpro.org\/dalexish\/files\/2025\/02\/summer-mentor-flyer.pdf\">Groups Announcement Flyer<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the summer, I designed a summer mentor flyer for a mentorship program aimed at helping freshmen build friendships and adjust to college life. This initiative was part of my role as a summer mentor, where we created a small group setting for new students to connect. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I organized and promoted a mentorship outreach event for freshmen, using a flyer as part of our communication efforts. This experience taught me how to communicate ethically and effectively, ensure accurate messaging, and create inclusive outreach strategies. The event planning process challenged me to uphold professional standards and practice ethical decision-making in outreach. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This assignment connects to ethical and professional behavior because it shows my ability to communicate effectively, organize outreach efforts, and support student well-being. It also highlights my role in creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for new students, which is important in social work.
