Social workers strive to utilize evidence-based practices to support all that they do as professionals. In order to uphold this standard, research is needed. An understanding of how to apply quantitative and qualitative research to interventions and evaluations with the appropriate population is essential. Through this process, social workers integrate scientific inquiry, logic, and ethical practices in their endeavor to contribute to research. Information may come from a variety of sources, and social workers must know how to adeptly apply data from research to practical interventions in order to address real-life situations.<\/span><\/p>\n

4A – Engage in a review of contemporary best practices.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a part of a class focusing on mental health, I reviewed current research and wrote a literature review<\/a> on how a sense of social connectedness is associated with the mental health of adolescents. In doing this, I saw how the findings of research can be applied to social work practice in a relevant and practical way. In light of the affective process, I was receiving the information at this point. However, the goal is to integrate the information into practice in order to reach characterization. On a cognitive level, I demonstrated analyzing in the way that I processed and organized the information.\u00a0A value that is present in research is competence. In order to more effectively work as a competent social worker, it is imperative to continually research information that contributes to contemporary best practice.<\/p>\n

4B – Conduct research that responds to social work practice needs.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was a part of a research team conducted by Dr. Alan Parker, the\u00a0senior advisor for sexuality and gender issues at Southern Adventist University. As a part of this team, I helped to organize eight focus groups by recruiting and communicating with participants. In order to do this, I had to utilize organization, communication, and networking skills. I also facilitated one of the focus groups, using an interview guide<\/a>. Before beginning the focus group, I distributed and collected a\u00a0demographics sheet<\/a>. In order to do this, I had to have knowledge regarding how to facilitate focus groups effectively, which I gained through attending a brief training by Dr. Kristie Wilder. In facilitating the groups, I had to utilize active listening skills. The data is being used in order to make decisions regarding policies and resources at Southern Adventist University.\u00a0Research is needed in making decisions that impact the lives of others. Research enables more accurate comparisons to take place, as the Perceptual Contrast Effect explains. The focus groups provided more information that could be compared and utilized in decision making.<\/p>\n
