Social work involves the “at home” work of engaging with policy changes and relating them to social work values. Social workers intentionally seek out opportunities to promote the well-being of clients.

This competency challenges me to seek information. It is a call to action, and must be consistently done in order to adequately advocate for clients. This competency challenges me as a social worker to become a global citizen, to go beyond my professional day-to-day responsibilities, but to create a lifestyle and values that align with advancing justice.

I will continue to educate myself through literature and books concerning human rights and social justice. I will engage in conversations, and work to know what policies affect the well-being of my clients.

School Evidence

SOCW-455-Social Work PracticeWith Organizations and Communities: Social Work Day on the Hill

For this event, we were able to attend Social Work Day on the Hill. At this event, we attended panels of social workers who discussed the importance of advocacy and how to address the needs of people to legislators. We were then able to attend a session with a representative. The group of social workers asked questions about a bill concerning social work licensing, and asked overall questions about the work that he does.

This field trip allowed me to practice the skills of advocacy and collaboration. I believe that this event was particularly unique in that it was held with a group of individuals who were also social workers. I believe that an important aspect to advancing human rights and advocacy is to do so in collaboration with others and to learn from others.

I chose this assignment because competency two really hones into the importance of advocacy and engaging in advancement of people. One of my biggest takeaways from this day was hearing social workers explain that a way in which social workers do this is by advocating in a way in which fosters relationships and mutual respect. This assignment is a compilation of skills learned and practiced in social work-active listening, engagement, summarizing, and asking questions.

Field Evidence

Infographic of Barriers in Hospice

I was inspired to do this project because of a webinar I had watched about communities who are less likely to access hospice. I wanted to address this by creating an infographic about different populations that were not being reached, as well as evidence based ways in which hospice could close this gap.

I chose to do this project because as a social worker who strives to advocate, it is important to also recognize the needs. After knowing the needs, it becomes a tool to advocate for change. Engaging in strategies that eliminate barriers requires an understanding of how the system works, as well as knowing how the system does not reach everyone. This project allowed me to practice the skills of integrity, because knowing the disparities without speaking on them would be a disservice to the patients I serve.

Other Evidence Outside of School and Field

Accent Article-Southern’s Student Newspaper

Link to the article:

Celebrating Black businesses on Southern’s campus – Southern Accent (southern-accent.org)

I wrote an article as a guest contributor during Black History month for the on campus newspaper, where I interviewed students from the African diaspora about their personal business. I asked them questions such as how they started their business, what they sell, and how people can access their merchandise.

I chose this evidence because I believe that it is important as social workers to shed light on communities that are often overlooked. Historically, it has been difficult for black businesses to thrive, and this project gave me the opportunity to engage and advocate for inclusivity and equitability.

I used the interviewing skills for this project. I sought out business owners I knew or had heard about, and asked relevant questions in order to share their stories and businesses.

Competency Narratives Social workers understand that every person regardless of position in society has fundamental human rights.
