Social workers understand theories of human behavior, person-in-environment, and other interprofessional conceptual frameworks, and they critically evaluate and apply this knowledge in selecting culturally responsive interventions with clients and constituencies, including individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. Social workers understand methods of identifying, analyzing, and implementing evidence-informed interventions and participate in interprofessional collaboration to achieve client and constituency goals. Social workers facilitate effective transitions and endings.

Social workers:
a. Incorporate culturally responsive methods to negotiate, mediate, and advocate with and on behalf of clients and constituencies.

My Narrative

Social work is listening to clients, as well as intervening on behalf of them. Interventions that are effective require cultural awareness, as well as evidenced based so that it can be helpful to clients. This competency can be challenging because implementation requires research and evidence based interventions. Research is constantly improved, which means that it is imperative to be well informed. I will remain committed to this competency by having intentional engagement to better understand best interventions for each individual client. I will research best practices, as well as practice professionalism by collaborating interprofessionally. I will also commit to maintaining professionalism and trust, by creating an environment conducive to mediation, communication, and advocacy.

This competency will be used in my future as a social worker. I will need to consistently use this competency along with the previous competencies to do this one effectively and ethically. Depending on my population, interventions will be different, but will all have the same purpose of working toward the goals of the client and constituency.

School Evidence

SOCW-498-Research Methods I-Single Subject Design Paper

The purpose of this assignment was to create a pseudo-client situation based upon our clientele at our practicum. It required the research to know what interventions would address the client’s needs.

This assignment helped me develop the ability to search for interventions that would address the needs of a client, but in a culturally informed way. It required me to truly know the problem that the patient was facing, and to research best practices so that the patient’s needs and goals could be met.

I chose this assignment because it challenged me to use research best practices for my population, as well as incorporated ways to measure the intervention.

Field Evidence

Resource List-Case Note from 12/18

Holidays can be difficult for a lot of families. During the Christmas season, my instructor asked that I call non-profits in the Collegedale/Chattanooga area to see who was giving out food boxes for a family in need. This list includes the non-profits that responded with information (their number, what they offered, and hours of operation) as well as ones that did not offer food boxes or did not answer and a voicemail was left. That day, I also intervened for a patient who needed bank information. I was also asked by my instructor to collect information from a patient’s bank so that they could access their account.

Interventions look different for every patient. The reason that I chose this evidence and why it achieved the highest level of competency in my practicum experience thus far is because this was a culturally responsive intervention to assist and advocate on behalf of a patient. This project required me to understand the person in the environment, and to address the immediate needs of patients.

I used the value of competency of service for this evidence. Service requires active searching for what is needed for each client, regardless of experience or normalcy. Service, I have learned, can be through active engagement with a patient and family or filling in the gaps or needs they may have.

Other Evidence Outside of School and Field

PETH-364:Administration of Health, Physical Education and Recreational Therapy-5K Planning: Email to Volunteers and Photo of Registration

In this course, Administration of Health, Physical Education and Recreational Therapy, we were tasked with creating and facilitating the annual 5k that occurs on Southern’s campus. This 5k is also a fundraiser to raise money for the Austin Hatcher Foundation. In particular, my job was to lead the volunteers needed to make the 5K successful. Volunteers were tasked to be on the course or the race, ensuring people were safe, passing out waters, and ensuring that participants were following the rules of the race.

The reason I chose this to address this competency was because without the volunteers, we would not have been able to fulfill the requirements of the 5k. This 5k was facilitated to engage with an organization that is advocating for families and individuals with cancer, specifically children. This intervention was intended to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer, specifically working to raise money for the organization Hatcher Foundation. Social workers believe in advocating for human rights and access to care, and this 5k addressed the needs of that community.

I chose this evidence for this competency because it not only advanced human rights by raising awareness, but it also required the team effort to raise money from willful donors. Money is often a dilemma in the field, and having the skill set to raise awareness and resources to fill the gap is crucial for advancement.

Social workers understand that intervention is an ongoing component of the dynamic and interactive process of social work practice.
