Upon Reading Chapter 9 of the “Understanding Human Behavior and the Social Environment”, several things came to mind concerning gender stereotypes. The first is the movie “A League of Their Own”. The movie deals with Major league Baseball during the WWII period. Due to the Men being shipped off to fight in the war females are brought in to continue the game. They are given a set of rules on how to act and how to dress so that the public will still see them as females. Even today we see them same rules being enforced just in a more nonchalant way. Women are expected to raise children, cook, clean, and be submissive to their men which can hinder their ability to excel in outside opportunities. I remember sitting in class last semester and every single person in the class sat there and said they didn’t believe in stereotyping however most of these people will if they have not already dress their little baby boys in blue and little girls in pink. From the second a child is born they must conform to the stereotypes we as society places on them. We will buy our daughters barbie dolls, pretty little dress up outfits and place them in beauty pageants while at the same time we play fight with our little boys to make them tough, buy them toy guns and tell them not to cry. As we grow older these same stereotypes continue to be used and expected by society and for anyone who attempts to step outside their gender stereotypes they are looked at as different and chastised for it.
