6: Research

(6.1) Use practice experience to inform scientific inquiry.

Field: Elder abuse is something I frequently come across in my field setting, so while at the Library of Congress, I did the majority of my research on this topic so that I could be more aware of the many themes and facets involved when dealing with the residents.

Class: I took a couple of elective courses about the elderly population because that is an area I am interested in. When it came time to write my literature review paper for SOCW 312, I recalled my interest in those two classes and decided to write my paper about The risk factors of suicide among the elderly. I also presented a PowerPoint based on my research at Campus Research Day.

(6.2) Use research evidence to inform practice.

Field: I demonstrated this practice behavior when I did research at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. on topics such as risk factors of elder abuse, types of elder abuse, a history of elder abuse, APS statistics, and programs for the elderly including Social Security and Medicare.

Class: The Single Subject Design project  and presentation helped me to use the knowledge that I have gained to find suitable interventions for a pseudo-case that my peers and I worked on.
