Competency 3: Human Rights

Advance Human Rights and Social, Economic and Environmental Justice

As Social Workers it is our duty to understand and ensure that every individual has human rights. We must engage in practices that promote social, economic and environmental justice for all individuals. By applying this we can better understand and represent our clients, as well as help bring awareness to those who have been oppressed or discriminated.

Practice Behaviors

1. Apply their understanding of social, economic, and environmental justice to advocate for human rights at the individual and system levels.

2. Engage in practices that advance social, economic, and environmental justice.

Academic Evidence

I have written a literature review concerning How Homosexual Individuals Reconcile Sexual and Christian Identities. I participated in Campus Research Day to promote awareness for this population and the unique struggle many experience throughout their lifetime.

Internship Evidence

During the beginning of this semester I took a sexual abuse awareness and prevention class which lead me to gain knowledge on the lack of understanding many healthcare providers have around child sex trafficking and the need to be  Trauma-Informed. I used this article to advocate to case managers concerning the need for trained social workers who can join together to advocate for how to determine high risk patients and inform an interdisciplinary team of strategies to address commercial sexual exploitation. I gave those social work case managers a list of resources that can help them navigate the topic.
