Competency 6: Engagement

Engage with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities

Social workers should understand that engagement is an ongoing component of social work practice with diverse individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. Social workers should value human relationships and understand strategies of engaging with diverse clients to have more advanced practice effectiveness. As a social worker, I will value principles of relationship-building and inter-professional collaboration to facilitate engagement with clients, constituencies, and other professionals as appropriate.

Practice Behaviors

1. Apply knowledge of human behavior and the social environment, person-in-environment, and other multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks to engage with clients and constituencies.

2. Use empathy, reflection, and interpersonal skills to effectively engage diverse clients and constituencies.

Academic Evidence

Using empathy and other interpersonal skills, I practiced my generalist social work skills to facilitate a case management interview with a pseudo-client. Here is the Analysis Paper for Case Manager Interview Project #2.

Internship Evidence

While on the Pediatrics floor 300/400, I attended an interprofesstional collaboration meeting with CPS social worker, the doctor, medical social worker, psychologist, CPS supervisor and patients mother. I used engagement to reflect and process various perspectives that were presented in the meeting.
