Competency 7: Assessment

Assess Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities

Social workers understand that assessment is an ongoing component of social work practice. By meeting this competency I demonstrate that I understand methods of assessment with diverse clients and constituencies to advance practice effectiveness. As a social worker I vow to be aware that my personal experiences and reactions may affect my assessment and decision-making.

Practice Behaviors

1. Collect and organize data, and apply critical thinking to interpret information from clients and constituencies.

2. Apply knowledge of human behavior and the social environment, person-in-environment, and other multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks in the analysis of assessment data from clients and constituencies.

3. Develop mutually agreed-on intervention goals and objectives based on the critical assessment of strengths, needs, and challenges within clients and constituencies.

4. Select appropriate intervention strategies based on the assessment, research, knowledge, and values and preferences of clients and constituencies.

Academic Evidence

I video recorded a  15 minute interview completing an ecomap to assess for ACES and resilience scores with a pseudo-client. I learned how to navigate the interview process and assess client strength and limitations.

Internship Evidence

While on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unite (NICU), I developed mutually agreed-on intervention based on the clients needs of scheduling the babies first pediatrician post-birth.
