Competency 8: Intervene with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities

Another ongoing part of a Social Workers job is, to when given consent, intervene on behalf of clients we work with. We are to be knowledgeable about evidence-informed interventions in order to accomplish client and agency goals. Social Workers use collaboration to implement evidence informed interventions that they have come to know through their understanding of theories and environment.

For competency 8 I used my knowledge of Cognitive Behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing kills, art therapy, and play therapy when intervening with client’s during psychotherapy sessions. I exhibited the value of competence in order to strive and increase my professional knowledge and skills and to apply them in practice.  During my field practicum, I journaled my experience using an online sand tray for play therapy in order to observe themes throughout the client’s story. I also asked questions from the Colombia Suicide Severity Rating Scaling (CSSRS) for client’s who have expressed suicide ideation (8.1). During my course work I completed a CBT 20 min final video doing cognitive behavioral therapy with a pseudo client (8.1).

During my field practicum I trained the staff from Centerstone on emotional regulation strategies based off the lowest score of the emotional intelligence questionnaire. I created an infographic in addition to providing an informational video from Dr. Brackett who uses evidence-based strategies in his research (8.2). The affective and cognitive processes used were responding to a need based off the results of a questionnaire and listing the knowledge to proceed with emotional regulation strategies. The theoretical foundation exhibited is trauma-informed care. This approach recognizes the presence of trauma symptoms and acknowledges the role trauma may play in an individual’s life- including service staff. Using emotional regulation strategies will help encourage overall wellbeing especially for those providing therapy to vulnerable people. During my course work, our group integrated macro level evidenced based strategies in the development of Mind, Body, Soul Healing and the services offered at the organization (8.2). We referenced the Hearth Act which is a policy with the same mission as M.B.S to eradicate homelessness.
