Human rights and Justice are what social workers advocate for. This competency helps ensure that social workers understand that every individual has fundamental human rights such as freedom, safety, privacy, an adequate standard of living, health care, and education. To meet this competency I used analysis as the cognitive domain and organization as the affective domain. The theories utilized are conversion theory and roles. By meeting this competency I demonstrate that I understand my duty to advocate for these fundamental human rights. I have demonstrated this by assisting students without health care to receive medical attention and by helping families find resources that provide bill assistance. As a social worker I vow to apply my understanding of social, economic, and environmental justice to advocate for human rights at the individual and system levels and engage in practices that advance social, economic, and environmental justice.
Competency:
Advance Human Rights and Social, Economic, and Environmental Justice
Practice Behaviors:
3.1 Demonstrate leadership in advocating for human rights, social, economic and environmental justice
Evidence: I demonstrated this practice behavior by collaborating with my Advanced Social Policy group to create an evidence-based flyer that advocates for incarcerated pregnant women and their rights.
3.2 Design and implement social action strategies
Evidence: I demonstrated this practice behavior by creating and delivering an ACEs Presentation. I educated other social work professionals about ACEs, protective factors and how they related to the school setting. This was done to bring awareness to this issue and how we can become a protective factor for students.
