Engage In Practice-Informed Research and Research-Informed Practice
Social workers understand quantitative and qualitative research methods and their respective roles in advancing a science of social work and in evaluating their practice. Social workers know the principles of logic, scientific inquiry, and culturally informed and ethical approaches to building knowledge. Social workers understand that evidence that informs practice derives from multi-disciplinary sources and multiple ways of knowing. They also understand the processes for translating research findings into effective practice. Social workers:
Practice Behaviors
- use practice experience and theory to inform scientific inquiry and research;
- apply critical thinking to engage in analysis of quantitative and qualitative research methods and research findings; and
- use and translate research evidence to inform and improve practice, policy, and service delivery.
Academic Evidence:
During the time that I have gone to Southern Adventist University, I had the opportunity to be apart of two campus research days. I presented a power point presentation on my research findings. I also wrote on my findings in two literature review papers: What factors affect eating disorders? and What Are the Long-Term Effects of Rape Victims?. This demonstrated the skill and ability I have in research. I was able to analyze two different issues at hand and put it into perspective. It was a great opportunity to not only bring awareness but bring evidence based interventions to the table. I have certificates of completing and participating in campus research day.
Practicum Evidence:
I got the opportunity to research a solution based intervention that we used at my agency. I researched, Solution Based Casework and wrote a one page summary and analysis on the paper. I was then able to write down questions about it and talk to my supervisor about the effectiveness of this evidence based intervention. I was able to fill out and go over an SBC assessment format the All-staff and CQI meeting as well. We were able to analyze the situation and use this evidence solution based intervention with clients after I researched the topic. Here is the filled out SBC form.
