Competency 7: Assess Individuals, Families, Groups, and Communities
In order to properly assist clients, assessments must be done ahead of time. Coming from a person-in-environment approach, taking in many factors and analyzing them to understand the client in a more complete way is important. Partnering with the client and meeting them where they are at is also necessary for good practice. This leads to creating more realistic, individualized interventions.
Practice Behaviors
- Collect and organize data and apply critical thinking to interpret information from clients and constituencies
- Apply knowledge of human behavior and the social environment, person-in-environment, and other multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks in the analysis of assessment data from clients and constituencies.
- Develop mutually agreed upon intervention goals and objectives based on needs and challenges within clients and constituencies.
- Select appropriate intervention strategies based on the assessment, research knowledge, and values and preferences of clients and constituencies
Evidence
Field
Under the Homemakers Program I conducted and assist in the assessment process. All potential clients are referred to the program from Adult Protective Services. The purpose of the Homemakers Program is to assist vulnerable older adults in order to help them live safely in their homes. We assess the safety of their home, their health, their ability to complete daily tasks of living, and formulate goals. Here is an example of an assessment that I conducted.
Academic
A group of classmates and I completed what is called an Organization Analysis Assessment. In this project we were able to analyses the non-profit Partnership and create suggestions based on our findings.
