Competency 6: Engage with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organization, and Communities

Interaction with people and considering their background and environment are key factors in working with clients, as not one person is the same. Therefore, social workers must know how to engage in different manners and approaches. I will utilize the person-in-environment theory and others for comprehension. In adhering to the NASW Code of Ethics, I will display integrity and competence to show respect. I will stay informed on evidenced-based best practices to engage with others.

6A – Examine evidence-based practices to prepare for professional engagement across system

Course Evidence: During my Advanced Clinical Practice course, I practiced Cognitive Behavior Therapy skills in a pseudo individual session. In the video recording, I illustrated (Cognitive level: application) the steps for an initial session with a client. To view the video, please click here.

Field Evidence: During supervision with my field instructor, in valuing competence, I consulted on how to conduct an intake properly. In addition, we reviewed the framework of how to address marriage counseling. To view the journal, please click here.

6B – Engage with systems utilizing evidence-based practice strategies

Course Evidence: During my Advanced Clinical Practice Interventions II course, I corrected a group therapy ideal dialogue assignment. This assignment encouraged me to practice CBT group skills by correcting the inappropriate examples. I used critical and analytical skills to complete this assignment. Field Evidence: I facilitated two parenting classes at the Collegedale Church for Sabbath School. After having a meeting with a pastor on reviewing best practices, I created (Affective level: responding) an outline of how to structure the class.
