Competency 9: Evaluate

Evaluate Practice with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities

Evaluation is the final step in the cycle of social work. It allows the practioner to be able to discern the efficacy of their interventions and determine future needs of client systems. Evalution can also be a time for self-reflection. This is important for clients and social workers alike, because being able to accurately self-evalute is integral to promoting personal growth. This competency was demonstrated by both the evaluation of client intervention efficacy as well as self-evaluation.

Select Evidenced-Based Evaluation Strategies According to Their Efficacy with Specific Client Systems

Field: At the end of the survey submission period, I evaluated the information gained through the surveys that I sent out (in 7.2) and created a report of the findings and future recommendations to be submitted to the director of Disability Access.

Class: After demonstrating my skills as a group clinician. I did a self-evaluation, using the evidenced-based strategy of process recording. In this paper, I evaluate what was said, as well as what skill was being demonstrated and what I could have done better.

Other: One evaluation tool that is helpful to clinicians and practicitioners is an Automatic Thought Record. It helps clients and individuals to identify and evaluate their automatic thoughts and core beliefs. Being able to identify one’s automatic thoughts and what they mean is the first step to changing them for the better. For a week, I kept an automatic thought record for myself, but due to privacy reasons, I included the blank form as a part of this evidence. Following that week, I wrote a paper evaluating my core beliefs and identifying the resulting cognitive distortions that I experienced.

Evaluate the Efficiency and Effectiveness of Practice Outcomes Across Systems

Field: During the final meeting with each of my clients at the end of the Spring 2019 semester, I helped them evaluate the effectiveness of the integrated interventions and accommodations that were provided to them and facilitated an appropriate termination to our working relationship. Attached is an exerpt from my journal of this event.

Class: At the end of my emphasis course, I wrote a paper evaluating my experiences learning about systems in Chattanooga, TN. This paper reflects on what I learned and experienced as well as evaluates potential implications for the community.

Other: When speaking with one of my Disability Access clients during our last session, it was determined that receiving services from Disability Access had helped her exponentially. Last semester, when she was not receiving services, her term GPA was in the 1-point range. This semester, after receiving services from Disability Access, her term GPA was in the 3-point range. Due to confidentiality, I have attached an exerpt from my journal from that week as my evidence.
