Over the past year, I have been working towards my Master of Social Work at Southern Adventist University, and this portfolio exhibits the knowledge and experience that I have gained.
I can relate to the many that say they decided to become a social worker because they want to help people. The desire to help others is a common (almost cliché) reason for becoming a social worker, but it makes sense, considering how naturally good it feels. As I have grown in my understanding, I have come to realize that, to me, social work is far more than pursing the rewarding feeling of helping others. To me social work is a calling to “Learn to do good; Seek justice, Rebuke the oppressor; Defend the fatherless, Plead for the widow” (Isaiah 1:17).
Having a deep realization that I am called to live for others propels me in the way that I choose to live personally and professionally. My education has provided me with tools and more opportunities to do so. Ultimately, God is my rock and gives me all that I need to walk in His calling.
