Competency 1: Ethical and Professional Behavior

As a social worker, it is my priority to uphold ethical and professional values at the foundation of all that I do. In the variety of roles that I may assume as a social worker, I will seek to regulate my personal and professional values appropriately. I will present myself in a professional manner by the way I act, dress, and communicate. In practice, I will utilize technology to ethically further work done on behalf of those I am serving. In order to continue to grow and develop as a professional, I will take the initiative to seek consultation and think critically about the counsel I receive. By proactively establishing healthy boundaries to protect professional, ethical, and personal values, I will be better able to safely serve.

Practice Behaviors

  1. Make ethical decisions by applying the standards of the NASW Code of Ethics, relevant laws and regulations, models for ethical decision-making, ethical conduct of research, and additional codes of ethics as appropriate to context.
  2. Use reflection and self-regulation to manage personal values and maintain professionalism in practice situations.
  3. Demonstrate professional demeanor in behavior; appearance; and oral, written, and electronic communication.
  4. Use technology ethically and appropriately to facilitate practice outcomes.
  5. Use supervision and consultation to guide professional judgment and behavior.
