6.2 Engage with systems utilizing evidence-based practice strategies

I engaged with community members and organizations while with the American Red Cross concerning fire safety and disaster preparedness. While working with the HAM Radio Club, I was engaged with community members as an educator, teaching evacuation plans and fire safety. This allowed me to use my active listening skills and paraphrasing to ensure I understood their concerns and could successfully help them formulate a plan. I also had the opportunity to educate elementary school children, older adults, and deaf and hard-of-hearing community members. While working with the deaf and hard of hearing, I had the experience of using an interpreter for the first time. I had to be conscious of my bias to ensure I focused on the community members instead of the interpreter.  I successfully taught an engaging and informative preparedness class by treating everyone in attendance with respect.
