After using Green Social Work to understand how a disaster affects people and that those with low socioeconomic status are often affected more by a disaster, I designed and implemented the Recovery Kit for the American Red Cross Southeast Tennessee to hand out to clients after they had experienced a disaster. This kit aids in the client’s recovery efforts and helps with social justice by providing essential resources on trauma, mental health signs and symptoms to watch for, coping skills, and how to recover after a disaster. The kit includes tools enabling the client to wash clothes, see up close, write down needed information, keep information organized, and stress-relieving fidget items.
